Economy during Mughal Era

The economy in Mughal Empire depended on Agriculture, trade and other Industries. Agriculture has always been a backbone of the economy in India. Hence, agriculture was the main source of national income and majority of the population used to depend on agriculture during Mughal administration. The major crops that were cultivated in the Mughal era were Millets, Oilseeds, cereals, Sugarcane, Cotton etc. Transport and communication facilities also helped in improving the Mughal economy.

Mughal Emperor Babur backed the cultivation of several Asian fruits in India. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, textile industries evolved to a great extent. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, cultivation of tobacco and potato were introduced by the Portuguese. Cotton was also traded on a large scale in the Mughal period to capture the market. Mughal emperors preferred to settle in towns and cities. During the 18th century, Mughal Empire first fell to Marathas and then under the hands of British Empire, the Mughals started losing their grip in the market.

This silver Nazarana Rupee, minted in Agra was issued by the Mughal emperor Jahangir during the 8th year of his reign. It was issued during the month Amardad. The obverse is inscribed with the name and title of the king while the reverse is inscribed with the ilahi month, mint name, Regnal year and the hijri year 1022.
