Gold Pagoda of Tipu Sultan Sold for INR 14,000

Tipu Sultan also known as Tiger of Mysore or Tipu Sahib was the ruler of the kingdom of Mysore. He was the eldest son of the Hyder Ali. He had introduced numbers of Administrative innovations, including his coinage and new calendar system known as ‘Mauludi year’.During the first four years of his reign, he issued coins only from two mints – ‘Patan’ and ‘Nagar’. From the fifth year of the reign, the number of mints was increased to eight. The coins which he had issued during the first four years of his reign bear Hijri date; which reads from left to right. Coins which he had issued during the fifth year of his reign bear the Mauludi date, which reads from right to left.
One of the gold ‘Pagoda’ also known as ‘Faruqi’ minted at ‘Patan’, during the 10th year of his reign was sold for INR 14,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 4th April 2009. The obverse of the coin inscribed as ‘Huwa Muhammad As-Sultan Al-Adil Sanah 1220’ and the reverse of the coins inscribed as ‘Faruqi Patan sanah 10’.
