Schlierbach Monastery cheese dairy on Austrian Stamps

2017-07-25 Tue

Schlierbach Monastery cheese dairy has been shown on special 68¢ stamps from Austria’s Classic Trademarks series that were released on 28th April. The stamp was released during a ceremony at the monastery that ended with a solemn address and a cheese buffet.

The stamp features a traditional logo used while packaging cheese. It depicts the monastery in Upper Austria as well. Built in the 14th century, it was initially a nunnery. Later, it was abandoned during the Protestant Reformation and in the 17th century, it was turned into a Cistercian monastery. The monastery’s cheese dairy was founded by Brother Leonhard Kitzler in 1924. Cheese was made from sheep’s and goat’s milk in 2008. An organic operation was adopted in 2012.

It’s the largest monastery cheese dairy in Europe which is known for making 20 kinds of soft cheeses. Cheeses from this monastery get its unique flavour from the traditional production methods and maturing in the cellar.
