Tipu Sultan’s Silver Double Rupee Sold for INR 3, 00,000

This silver double rupee was issued by Tipu Sultan in the Mauludi year 1218 during his 8th regnal year.

Tipu Sultan ascended the throne of Mysore, on 4th May 1783. He is also known as Sher-e-Mysore or the Tiger of Mysore. He is remembered for the fight he gave to the British and also for his great military achievements.

Tipu Sultan issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. He had also given a different name to all denominations that he had issued. All the gold and silver coins were named after the names of Muhammadan saints, Khalifas, and imams. His copper coins had names of planets, e.g., ‘Paisa’ is also known as ‘Zohra’, ‘ Zohra’ is the Persian name of Planet ‘Venus’; ‘Half-Paisa’ is also known as ‘Behram’, ‘Behram’ is Persian name of Planet ‘Mars’, ‘Quarter-Paisa’ is also known as ‘Akhtar’, ‘Akhtar’ is the word for star.

This silver double rupee also known as ‘Haidari’ was minted in Patan. The weight of this coin is around 22.7g. The obverse side of the coin is inscribed as ‘Muhammad Ahmed Din Dar Jahan Ast Roshan Ze Fath Haidar Haidari He Zarb Patan Saal Shita Sanah 1218’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Huwa-as Sultan Al-Wahid Al-Adil Tarikh Julus Saal Sakh Seum Bahari Sanah 8 Julus.
