$120,000 - The Real Worth of 1928 $50 Gold Certificate
2016-01-23 Sat
The rarity of 1928 $50 gold certificates can be measured by the fact that only a dozen of them exist in this world today. To improve physical security, these certificates were a way to invest in gold and represented an amount of this precious possession owned. Hence, what makes this note different from other rare notes of the world is that they were redeemable in gold. This special series of notes is sometimes called as numeral notes as the black seal on the left hand side of the note contains a number (1 - 12). All twelve Federal Reserve banks printed series of 1928 $50 bills in Washington DC. These notes are characterized by their gold colored seals along with their serial numbers and are worth more than green seal fifties.
They feature a portrait of Ulysses S Grant and have The U.S. Capitol on the back. Also, “In God We Trust” didn’t start until 1956. Therefore no 1928 notes ever have that motto on them.
This specific one has a gold clause which reads, “This certificate is a legal tender in the amount thereof in payment of all debts and dues public and private”. A 1928 $50 gold certificate was valued at $120,000 and will sell at Heritage Auctions in April 2015. It’s considered to be one of the best examples of the note.
