Victoria and Albert

Queen Victoria was coronated today in 1836. Isn’t this the perfect occasion to read about her one true love and their almost perfect marriage? Royal Mail seems to agree on this and hence had issued a 22 Pence postal stamp of Victoria and Albert behind her in a frame alongside a naval ship in 1987. Let’s read some more about them.

Queen Victoria and Albert were first cousins. Initially she refused to meet him but, when she did, it was love at first sight! She wrote in her diary “He is extremely handsome; his hair is about the same color as mine; his eyes are large and blue, and he has a beautiful nose and a very sweet mouth with fine teeth; but the charm of his countenance is his expression, which is most delightful.”

Their love was so insatiable for each other that in the 21 years of their marriage they had nine children! However there were some rough fights between them also. It was difficult in those times for a man to remain inferior to his wife. But neither Victoria was willing to bend down and lose her powers as queen nor could Albert stay low. Overtime she started having postnatal depression and extreme temper tantrums.

When he died at the age of 42, she went into long periods of mourning and often wrote that Albert was her soul, her guiding angel, and that life without him made no sense. She even planned on suicide but never gave up. It is said she always slept with his photo beside her every night and their love remained long after their death.

Mintage World is proud to present a stamp set of eternal love stories depicted on stamps like Orpheus and Eurydice, Eros and Psyche, Napoleon and Josephine and Paris and Helen. Read on!
