2017-06-09 Fri
On 7th June, the National Bank of Georgia officially declared that new 5 lari banknotes will be released for circulation in September 2017. New 10-lari banknotes will be issued later this year. The latest 20- and 50-lari banknotes have been in circulation since 1st February 2016 whereas the new 100-lari was released on 1st November 2016.By maintaining the same theme, the obverse of the new note features Ivane Javakhishvili of Tbilisi State University. For the purpose of achieving better quality and volume, a different portrait relief has been used. The reverse recreates paintings by Niko Pirosmani: Fisherman in a Red Shirt and Floor. It also depicts the state coat of arms.
The new 5-lari banknotes have modern security features and marks to help the visually impaired identify the note’s denomination. A better quality material is used to produce the new notes for increasing their lifespan and for making them resistant to abrasion and contamination.
