Hello…everyone. Hope you are aware that we have uploaded Greece coins on our website.Greeks were amongst the few who issued the earliest coins! Their coins are eye pleasing because of their motifs and symbols on them.
As discussed before every city states had its own patron God. For example, Athens had Athena.
Today we will know more about the Greek city-state, Ephesos. Many of the coins from this famous city use a 'bee and stag' theme.
Well… the animals or birds depicted on their coins are not just for attraction but it has a religious significance to it. Artemis was a city god of Ephesos. She is a huntress and usually seen riding a deer chariot or holding deer in her hand. The deer is sacred to Artemis so it is seen on the Ephesos coins on the reverse. And the bee has a similar significance!
In the given picture if we see, there is a word to the right of the stag. It is the Greek name of the magistrate in the city of that time. Think of him as a sort of an ancient mayor, who oversaw the town and signed off on important documents. For most of these magistrates, nothing is known about them except these numismatic evidences.
br> Isn’t it pretty exciting to own a coin that is the only evidence left behind by a person who lived over two millennia ago!
