Canada's popular 11-sided one-dollar coin was released for the first time in June 1987. It was called a "Loonie" when a loon was featured on the reverse. The coin marked a revolution in Canada's coinage after almost 50 years. As the country celebrates its 150th Anniversary, the iconic loonie celebrates its 30th anniversary as well. Apart from featuring several special designs over 30 years, the Loonie is a pioneer for its composition and amazing security features.A special numismatic set with a mintage limit of 10,000 was produced by the Mint to celebrate this special occasion. The set comprises of a 99.99% pure silver edition of the Loonie design as designed by Robert Ralph Carmichael. Another coin re-creates the one-dollar design of the "Voyageur" that was designed by Emanuel Hahn. The design was later used on the 1935 silver dollar.
