One of The Four Remaining Rare 1810 Gold Half Eagles to Be Auctioned
2017-06-05 Mon
Stack’s Bowers Galleries will be conducting auctions at Whitman Coin and Collectibles Summer Expo from 21st to 23 June. Online auctions will take place from June 26 and 27. Highlights of the auction include an 1810 Capped Bust, Large Date, Small 5 gold $5 half eagle, graded Fine Details. The earlier mounting is visible, which is why it is possible that it was used as jewellery.4 major die marriages are found in the 1810 Capped Bust half eagles. This BD-3 variety is the rarest of all. Only four coins of this type exist today and some examples have been misattributed in the past as well. The first and the finest one, graded About Uncirculated 50, belongs to the Bass Collection and is showcased at the American Numismatic Association Money Museum. The second existing coin of the same type that's graded Very Fine 25 was sold for $56,400 in February 2016. The third example is graded VF-30 and has smoothed fields to probably improve mint lustre.
