1904 and 1984 Olympic Games Gold Medals to be Auctioned

Two gold medals in golf that were won at the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games and one gold medal in women’s basketball from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics are being offered by Lelands.com's auction till 30th June.

Golfer H. Chandler Egan won the gold and silver medals at the 1904 Games. The 1900 and 1904 Games were the only Olympic competition when golf was included after which, the game made its comeback in 2016 Olympics. Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Co. in St. Louis produced these medals. The company’s name is inscribed on the reverse as well. The obverse depicts a golf bag, thistles, and a banner inscribed GOLF. The reverse also has the inscription GLEN ECHO / COUNTRY CLUB / OLYMPIC TEAM / GOLF CHAMPION / H.C. EGAN. The obverse design of the Silver medal is the same while the reverse features the inscription OLYMPIC / RUNNER-UP / H.C. EGAN. The pinback bar has the inscription 1904 / UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION / OLYMPIC GAMES / ST. LOUIS.

Egan was a great amateur golfer of his time, who played for 33 more years after he won the medal. He also partnered with golf course architect Alistair Mackenzie for designing and redesigning many important golf courses. Teresa Edwards received a gold medal in Basketball on behalf of her team. The obverse of the silver coin features the goddess of victory. She carries a palm in her left hand and a winner’s crown in her right. On the reverse of the Edward's Medal features an image of her carried by the crowd and the Olympic stadium in the background. It has an edge inscription BASKETBALL WOMEN.
