Freud & the Viennese Schools of Psychotherapy Celebrated on Austrian Coins

The Vienna Schools of Psychotherapy is being honoured by a three-part series of 50 Euro gold coins by the Austrian Mint. The first coin pays tribute to the inventor of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. His famous theories talking about the spiritual and intellectual life of man is famous all around the world. analysed how our unconscious mind affected our behaviour. He also believed that sexuality is an integral part of human existence.

Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Viktor Frankl worked in Vienna and contributed in their own ways towards the new scientific discipline of psychotherapy in the early 20th century. Adler established a school of individual psychology, and Frankl developed logotherapy and the analysis of existence. The next two coins are in the name of them.

The obverse of the first coin features a portrait of Sigmund Freud. The reference point for the portrait was a 1926 photograph by Ferdinand Schmutzer. The reverse focuses on the central theme in Freud's work: Lust. A pair of lovers is far from reality and is enjoying a common dream.
