Shah Jahan was one of the greatest emperors of the Mughal Empire. He was born as prince ‘Khurram’ to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the year 1592 AD. He was the fifth Mughal Emperor and sat on the throne in the year 1628 and continuing until his death 1658. The meaning of the word Shah Jahan is ‘King of the World’. During his reign, India became the richest center of art, crafts, and architecture. He is best known for ‘Taj Mahal’ which he build in the memory of his beloved wife ‘Mumtaz Mahal’. Another one of his famous creations is the Peacock throne. His reign is also described as ‘Golden Age’ of Mughal Empire.

This very rare gold mohur which weighs around 10.9g, minted in Surat was sold for INR 2, 70, 000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sahib Qiran Shihab Al Din Muhammad Shah Jahan Badshah Gazi’ written in three lines with regnal year Ahad written in the second line, within dotted borders. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Kalima, mint name ‘Surat’ and the Hijri date 1037’.
