Akbar Silver Rupee Sold for INR 1, 95,000

This beautiful silver rupee was issued by Mughal Emperor Akbar during the 50th year of his reign. The weight of the coin is around 11.2g and was minted in Agra.During the 29th year of his reign Akbar founded new religion known as ‘Din-i-ilahi’, the Hijri era from his coin was changed to the ilahi era and this was continued until his death.
Akbar issued coin in gold, silver, and copper. His coinage can be divided into two categories; ’Kalima’ and ‘Ilahi’ (Non-Kalima).
Coins which were issued with the ‘Kalima’ had the name of the emperor, with the name of mint (with or without an Epithet) and Hijri date on the obverse; and ‘Kalima’ with the name of four caliphs on the reverse.
Ilahi coins issued by him have the ilahi creed ‘Allahu Akbar Jalle Jallaluhu’ on the obverse and on the reverse Persian month followed by word ilahi; with ilahi year and mint name.
This silver rupee is the beautiful example of ‘ilahi’ type coin. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Allahu Akbar Jalle Jallaluhu’ and reverse of the coin is inscribed with Persian month ‘Amardad’ with word Ilahi written above and ilahi date 50 and Mint name Agra written below.
This coin was sold for INR 1, 95,000 at Todywalla Auction.
