Two platinum group metals to make an inroad into the marketplace

Dr Eric Thorsgard, chief executive officer of Cutting Edge Opportunities has produced the Osmiridium Coin, with the help of two platinum group metals — osmium and iridium.

Osmiridium is the name given to a metal that is a combination of the two elements osmium and iridium.

June is the month of action for Thorsgard, who plans to introduce 15,000 limited-edition rounds manufactured on blanks cut from bars composed of .999 fine osmium. He also plans to offer bullion rounds of either osmium or iridium, depending on which metal at the time is less costly.

The details of each of the 15,000 osmium collector pieces from the Osmiridium brand is 20 millimetres in diameter, 4.5 millimetres thick, with a weight of 31.1 gms. The metal’s density is 22 grms per cubic centimetre.

To reach its desired thickness, the pieces are cut from the osmium bar and then polished to remove uneven edges. The detailing on the obverse and reverse and the serial number on the edge are laser-etched.

The main goal of producing extreme density osmium coins is to match up to the price of osmium to iridium, from $400 per ounce to more than $900 per ounce.Iridium has increased over the past nine months to $945 per ounce from $520.

Through a registry on the OsmiriduumCoin.com website, all the 15,000 limited-edition pieces will be numbered, registered, sold and bought. This, in turn, will help to track ownership of each of those pieces.

Except for the first 15,000 limited edition collectors coins that will be numbered and registered, Osmiridium coins will be bullion coins. Whoever produces these coins will have to use pure osmium and iridium. And if a maker contaminates the osmiridium bullion coin with a foreign object, then the outcome will differ drastically and it will either be too large for its weight or to light for its size.
