2017-05-17 Wed
In the past two days, we have studied about the Alexandrian and Ilium coinage of Troas. Belonging mainly between 4thto 5th century B.C., the coinage of Troas can be divided into four distinct region groups :• Alexandria.
• Ilium.
• Abydus and
• Sigeum
Today we shall learn a little more about the coinage of Troas, Abydus.
This coinage can further be divided into three sections Argead, Thrace and Seleucids under six rulers- Philip II, Philip III, Alexander III, Lysimachus, Antiochus II and Antiochus Hierax. The obverse and reverse of these coins are vastly different from each other. Some of the busts appearing on the obverse of these coins are Apollo, Athena, Heracles, etc. On the reverse are various portraits with a few being Athena Nikephoros, a chariot of horses, etc. The obverse of the coin shown in the image alongside has the bust of Athena wearing a crested Corinthian helmet facing right. The reverse has a portrait of Nike facing left, a wreath outstretched in her left hand and a mast (stylist) in her right hand. A monogram can be seen on the left side below. The legend “FILIPPOU” is inscribed vertically on her right side.
