2017-05-17 Wed
Heritage CSNS Auctions sold an 1881-O Morgan dollar graded MS-66 with a green CAC sticker for $16,450 on 28th April in Chicago. Some collectors like colourful and toned Morgan silver dollars while others like them frosty. Collectors are willing to pay a huge amount for rare and exceptional Morgan Dollars.1881-O Morgan dollars have a mintage limit of almost 6 million, making them not-so-rare. Many of them, released by the Treasury Department through the 1960s, have been preserved in bags. They are rarely found in Mint State 65 and finer. Only 17 such examples are known, making them highly desirable.
The coin was sold for almost double the amount of a similar yet toned example that was sold at a different auction earlier. The coin belongs to the Siegel Collection, which has been put together over a period of 30 years.
