Gold Mohur of Aurangzeb Sold for INR 50,000

Aurangzeb was the sixth ruler of the Mughal Empire, also considered being the last effective ruler. His real name was 'Abu'l Muzaffar Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad' also known by his regnal title ‘Alamgir' which means ‘He who seizes the universe'.

It is contemplated that during his reign, Mughal Empire reached its greater extent. He extended the boundaries of the Mughal Empire beyond Sutlej River in north and Deccan in the south.

When Aurangzeb came to the reign, he replaced the use of Kalima on the coin with couplets, as he did not want to defile the Kalima through its association with the monetary transactions of infidels. He also introduces ‘Julus’ formula on his coin which reads as ‘Julus Maimanat Manus” with mint name and the year of his reign on the coin. There are two types of couplets with are found on his coins, ‘Mihir-e-Munir couplet’ and ‘Badr-e-Munir couplet’.

This gold mohur which weighs around 10.9g, minted in Golkonda during the 30th year of his reign, in the year 1086 was sold for INR 50,000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Chu Mihr-e-munir Badshah Aurangzeb Alamgir with AH Date’ and the reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Julus Formula, RY and Mint Name’.
