Traditional craft of India: kalamkari silk

Till now you all have read about the various traditional craft of India, but today you will learn about one of the most exuberant crafts of weaving. Its term means pen-work called ‘Kalamkari’, the features of its designs look like painting and printing.This silk was originated in Andhra Pradesh, it belongs to two distinct schools of textiles. The Masulipatnam which was patronized by Muslim rulers, the another was Sri Kalashasti developed in the Hindu temples. These two forms of Kalamakari had its influence from the Persian painting and the tenets of Islamic tradition and the latter featured the scenes from Hindu mythology. The paint sometimes replaced block painting for different patterns.
This art represents the part of the daily life of the ruler of Andhra, it is used in different rituals and ceremonies.
Some Interesting facts: The Kalam remained the main tool of kalamkari design even after it was changed by the blocks. To promote and recognise this fascinating art of Indian tradition India Post has issued a commemorative stamp in 2009.
