Indore King Shivaji Rao-III's Silver Rupee with Dual Date - FE and VS

2026-06-10 Wed

Shivajirao Holkar - Shri Sir Shivaji Rao Holkar Bahadur XII was the Maharaja of Indore Holkar State from 1886 to 1903. He was the son of Tukojirao Holkar II.

Interestingly the above silver rupee depicts two different date system and dual script - devanagari and persian.

The obverse depicts sun in centre with legend in devanagari around and date in Vikram era Samvat 1945. The reverse mentions Fasli date 1295. To arrive at gregorian date from Vikram Samvat (VS) date, deduct 56 from VS date.

Interestingly there is Fasle Era (FE) date 1295 on reverse. Fasli era dating was introduced by Akbar. Fasli word derives from Fasl, the Arabic/Urdu word for "harvest" or "season". This was introduced to streamline the agrarian economy. The Fasli calendar runs on a different year count than the Gregorian calendar. Depending on whether you are calculating the Northern or Southern Fasli, you generally add 590 to 593 years to convert a Fasli year to a common Gregorian/AD year.

On the above coin weighing 11.21g the obverse depicts Sun face, VS date below, cross swords & long flame like scroll, Devnagari legend “Srimat Maharaj Shivajirao Holkar Bahadar”around while the reverse has Persian legend with FE date 1295.
