Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s Gold Mohur Sold for INR 1, 25,000

Shah Jahan was one of the greatest emperors of the Mughal Empire. He was born as prince ‘Khurram’ to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the year 1592 AD. He was the fifth Mughal Emperor sitting on the throne in the year 1628 and continued until his death 1658. The meaning of the word Shah Jahan is ‘King of the World’. During his reign, India became the richest center of art, crafts, and architecture. He is best known for ‘Taj Mahal’ which he build in the memory of his beloved wife ‘Mumtaz Mahal’. Another one of his famous creations is the Peacock throne. His reign is also described as ‘Golden Age’ of Mughal Empire.

This is square type gold mohur which he issued during the 7th year of his reign, In the AH year 1032. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Shah Jahan Badshah Ghazi’ written within the square. Mint name ‘surat’ is written on the left side of the margin, Qiran-i-Sani’ is written at the bottom, ‘Muhammad Sahib’ is written on the right side. The reverse side of the coin is inscribed with the kalima as ‘la illah ila Allah Muhammad rasul Allah’ meaning ‘There is no other god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ with the Regnal year 7 written at the left bottom side within the square within the center square, with name of the four caliphs in the margin. AH, date 1032 is written in the left margin.
