Lead coin of Kumaragupta I

We have seen many Satavahana and Kshatrap lead coins depicting various motifs and symbols on them. The Gupta coinage is well known for the Gold coins. But they issued silver and copper too. However, it is worth noticing that in the last few decades some of the square lead coins of the Guptas have come to the light.

We have brought to you one such coin! Let’s have a look at it.

Kumaragupta I was the son and successor of Chandragupta II. He inherited the vast empire of his father.

Well… Gupta ruler’s coins were very artistic but the coins of Kumargupta are just mesmerizing because he came up with new innovations in both, metallurgy and iconography. He also tried experimenting new variations in coins with the existing ones.

The given picture is the lead unit issued by him weighing 2.57g. The obverse depicts garuda standing facing front. And reverse bears Brahmi legend ’Sri Kumaragupta’ within dotted border.
