Gold Fanam of Tipu Sultan Sold for INR 24,000

Tipu Sultan was born in the year 1750. He was named Tipu Sultan after a saint Tipu Mastan Aulia of Arcot. He is also known as Tiger of Mysore or Tipu Sahib. He was the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore. He had introduced a number of administrative innovations, including his coinage and new calendar system known as ’Mauludi year’.This gold Fanam minted in ‘Nagar’ was issued by him during AH year 1221. This gold fanam weighs around 0.33 to 0.40 gram. The obverse side of the coin is inscribed with the Persian letter ‘He’ within the centre circle. And reverse side of the coin is inscribed as AH year ‘1221’ with the mint name ‘Nagar’ within the circle.
This gold fanam was sold for INR 24,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 9th September 2006.
