The American Eagle silver dollar is more popular than Morgan dollars as per Numismatist Michael “Miles” Standish who is also the vice president of Numismatic Guaranty Corp. An educational forum was conducted by the Industry Council for Tangible Assets along with the Central States Numismatic Society 78th Anniversary Convention in Schaumburg, Ill on 27th April. Standish revealed that more than 400 million and 500 million of the American Eagle bullion silver coins have been sold since 1986.

The coins were introduced to make use of the millions of ounces of silver bullion that was held by the US Mint. The silver stock has run out and domestically mined silver is used to mint coins today.

More American Eagle silver bullion coins have been produced than Morgan silver dollars as the latter was produced between 1878 and 1904, and again in 1921. The American Eagle silver dollar has added to the revenue of the US Mint considerably.

Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle reverse design has been loved till date the artist has been requested to collaborate with Standish for producing a reference on the series. The book named American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program was released with this intention. Three editions are already out; the fourth one is work in progress. The Book has created a lot of interest amongst collectors for these bullion coins.
