200th Anniversary of the Dutch Gold Ducat

As the Dutch Gold Ducat celebrates its 200th Anniversary, Netherlands issued single and double Gold Ducat for 2017 featuring the original design that was used from 1817 to 1986. The coin depicts an armoured knight and the double dates of 1817 and 2017.

Orders for the single Gold Ducat and Double Gold Ducat in proof quality were allowed to be placed on reservation-only basis till May end. Mintage was equal to the number of orders received. Only 1,045 Gold Ducats and 845 Double Ducats were released in 2016, making them rare in the parallel market.

The Dutch ducat standard of .983 fine gold is used to mint the 3.494 gms single ducat coins. The coin can be booked for $269.75 USD. The Double Ducat weights 6.988 gms and can be booked for $469.75.

The first Gold Ducat was struck in Holland under the United Provinces in 1586. The first Double Ducat was struck from Friesland in 1612, after which the tradition was continued by the Dutch Kingdom.
