Silver Sawai Rupee of Jahangir Sold For INR 3, 00,000
2017-05-03 Wed
This beautiful silver square sawai rupee was issued by Jahangir in the Hijri year 1020 during the 6th year of his reign. The weight of the coin is around 14.25g and was minted at Lahore. Like his father, Jahangir has also issued coins with a name of Ilahi months on his coin. The interesting fact about this coin is the date on the coin is retrograde, the date on the coin should be AH 1020 but due to error it was struck as 0601, and the RY year was struck as ‘2’ instead of ‘6’. This coin was sold for INR 3, 00,000 at Todywalla Auction.
The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Shahanshah Zaman Shah Jahangir, ibn Shah Akbar’ with the regnal year ‘2’ written on the bottom right side within a decorated eight-pointed star shaped enclosure. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Mah Ardibihisht ibn Sikka dar Lahore zad bar Zar’, with the retrograde date ‘0601’ written on the bottom left side, within a decorated eight-pointed star shaped enclosure. For all the twelve different months Jahangir has issued twelve different couplets.
