Latest £1 Coin: Counterfeit or Mint Error?

2017-04-28 Fri

There have been recent reports that a counterfeit version of the new 12-sided one pound coin was found by a 48-year-old charity worker from Addlestone in Surrey, England named Roy Wright.

These so called fake coins were heavier and thicker; a lot of space was found between the inner and outer ring; Queen Elizabeth II is positioned to the left; the edges are rounder; there is no hologram; there is no detail on the head of the thistle. It is also dated 2016, but that’s not an error since the Mint had started producing many coins last year itself to meet the targets.

Thousands of trial pieces were also released for testing purposes in advance and some of them have reached online auction sites.

The Royal Mint is confident about the fact that these coins are not fake; it could be a production error as a lot of coins were minted in a very short period of time.

The new coin has several interesting security features including a special metallic composition with electromagnetic properties inside the inner disc of nickel alloy.
