2017-04-28 Fri

Several interesting and rare coins will be offered at the Regency Auction XXI by Legend Rare Coin Auctions which will be held on 18th May at Harrah’s Hotel in New Orleans.

Highlights include an 1853-C Coronet gold $5 half eagle graded Mint State 64, with a green CAC sticker with an estimate of $60,000 to $70,000. The same coin was sold in 1999 for $35,650, then in 2004 for $33,350 and again in 2013 for $64,625.

The mintage limit of this coin was 65,571, all of which were heavily circulated making About Uncirculated coins very rare. Newly mined gold from North Carolina and nearby places were used to strike coins at the Charlotte Mint from 1838.

Many “C” and “D” Mint gold coins of those times were poorly struck. The Charlotte Mint stopped production in 1861 after it came under the Confederacy.
