After independence, we have made lots of progress in dams and water reservoirs. Now India is one of the world’s most prolific dam-builders.

According to Central Water Commission, there are around 5,202 major dams in India and much more in the pipeline. These dams are the major attraction of tourists from all over India.

India Post has been encouraging the construction of dams by issuing stamps on them. The picture aside portrays Damodar Valley dam on a stamp which was issued in 1955 having the face value of 1 Anna.

Tehri dam (Uttarakhand) is the highest dam in India and eight highest dams in the world. Can you imagine how huge it will be? The Dam water reservoir is used for irrigation, municipal water supply and the generation of 1,000 MW of hydroelectricity.

The Idukki dam is the first Indian double curvature arch dam build across the Periyar river in Kerala and the largest arch dam in Asia.

Kallanai dam built across the river Kaveri in Tamil Nadu is the fourth oldest water diversion or water regulator structures in the world which are still in use. It was built by Chola king Karikalan in 2nd Century CE.

Apart from providing waters these magnificent Indian dams are unique in their way and stand separately in the world!
