Jalal Ud din Muhammad Akbar was the third Mughal Emperor. He is considered to be one of the greatest rulers of India. He sat on the Mughal throne in the year 1556, when he was 13 years old. After defeating Hemu – a Hindu general of Sur dynasty – in the Second Battle of Panipat (1556), Akbar reacquired the Delhi throne and established the Mughal rule again.

Akbar was a Muslim ruler, and he was aware of the fact that to establish a strong army he has to gain the confidence of the Hindu people who were a majority in India. To solve this problem he came up with the concept of ‘Din-i-ilahi’ - a religious path. This step reflected his secular idea and also his desire to achieve peace and unity. Akbar had started this religion in the 29th year of his reign. His religious policy can be seen through his coins. He had changed the traditional Hijri era from his coins to the illahi era.

This gold mohur which weighs around 10.9g was sold for INR 18, 00,000. The obverse of the coins is inscribed as ‘Allahu Akbar Jale Jalluhu’ which means ‘Allah is great may his glory shine forth’, but it also has another message which says ‘Akbar is Allah, may his glory shine’. The revere of the coin is inscribed with Persian month ‘Tir’ and ‘ilahi’ at the top and ‘Zarb Akbarnagar’ with regnal year 50 at the bottom.
