Belarus was formed after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. It is surrounded by Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, and Poland, ‘Belarus’ translates to ‘White Russia’.

Belarus was a part of Lithuania and then the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth till it became a part of the Russian Empire in the three Polish Partitions. It was under the dictatorship of Alexander Lukashenko from 1994.
