Wish You a “Happy Makar Sankranti”

India Post has issued a variety of stamps to celebrate the Harvesting Season of the tropical countries. Being one of the important festivals, Makar Sankranti is celebrated everywhere in India as well as in other countries by Hindu Communities.

Makar(Capricorn) Sankranti (movement) is celebrated on the day when Sun moves from tropic of Cancer to the tropic of Capricorn. Apart from harvest festival it is also regarded as an auspicious phase of transition.

In India Makar Sankranti is known by different names in different regions and is celebrated accordingly. In Maharashtra it is known as bhogi, Lorhi in Punjab, Pongal in Tamilnadu and srilanka and Bihu in Assam.

India Post as well as Post of Srilanka has issued stamps to celebrate this festival. India issued two stamps. One in 2006 with the denomination of Rs.5 depicting farmers working in field and the other one with the value of Rs.4 depicts Kites as kite flying is a favourite sport played on this day.

The Post of Sri Lanka also issued a set of two stamps commemorating the festival of Pongal with the denominations of Rs.5 and Rs.25 depicting a farmer and a farmer couple making festival special delicacy respectively.
