The Government of India had asked the Reserve Bank of India to import 3,600 million 100 rupees notes printed by German, Canadian, American, French and British companies in 97-98. These notes were signed by Governor Mr. Rangarajan. Some Rs.500 notes were signed by Mr. Rangarajan and the rest by Governor Mr.Bimal Jalan. This was a one-off decision taken by the government.

Mr. Bimal Jalan took over Mr. Rangarajan as the RBI governor on 22nd November 1997. That’s why some of the Rs. 500 notes had Mr. Bimal Jalan’s signature. Another significant change introduced was: the text under the portrait on the obverse ‘M. K. Gandhi’ was replaced by “Mahatma Gandhi”.
