Firuz Shah Tugluq's Gold Tanka Sold For INR 60,000

After the death of Muhammad Bin Tughluq, Firuz Shah Tughluq sat on the throne of Delhi in the year 1351 AD. After sitting on the throne of Delhi, he faced revolts from Bengal, Gujarat, and Warangal. However, even after so many rebellions, he maintained stability in his kingdom.

He issued coins in gold, silver, copper and billon. Coins which he struck in the beginning era of his reign have the name of the Caliph ‘Al-Hakim II’ inscribed on it. He has also included the name of the other caliphs like ‘Hakim II, Abu’l Fath and Abul Abd Allah in his coins in the further ruling year of his reign. Firuz Shah Tughluq sat on the throne in the year AH 752, but the first dated coin with his name ‘Firuz’ is dated as AH 759.

This rare gold tanka which weighs around 10.9g was sold for INR 60,000 at Todywalla Auction. It has the name of the Caliphs ‘Abul Fath Al-Mutasid’ inscribed in it. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan Al-Azam Saif Amir Al-Mu’minin Abul Muzaffar Firuz Shah Sultani Khulidat Mamlakatuhu’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Darabat Hadhihi Al Sikka Fi Zaman Al Imam Amir Al Muminin Abu'l Fath al Mustasid Billah Khulidat Khilafatahu’.
