2017-04-17 Mon

On 9th May, Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneer is going to offer a rare 1704 gold double ducat coin by the Danish West India Company for Christiansborg in Guinea. The colony is not called Ghana. Other Danish West Indies coins from private collector Ulrik Lauridsen will also be offered.

The Danish Gold Coast was a group of African Gold Coast colonies that Denmark and Norway controlled. Danish West India Company ruled this colony indirectly which later became a crown colony of Denmark-Norway. The Danish West India-Guinea Company took control over Fort Christiansborg and Carlsborg from 1674 to 1755 when this rare gold coin was issued in Copenhagen for use in the colony.

The coin features Danish King Frederik IV on the obverse and Christiansborg on the reverse. The fort is the centre of Ghana’s government today.
