Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s Coin Sold for INR 2, 50,000

Shah Jahan was one of the greatest emperors of the Mughal Empire. He was born as prince ‘Khurram’ to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the year 1592 AD. He was the fifth Mughal Emperor sitting on the throne in the year 1628 and continued until his death 1658. The meaning of the word Shah Jahan is ‘King of the World’. During his reign, India became the richest center of art, crafts, and architecture. He is best known for ‘Taj Mahal’ which he build in the memory of his beloved wife ‘Mumtaz Mahal’. Another one of his famous creations is the Peacock throne. His reign is also described as ‘Golden Age’ of Mughal Empire.

This gold mohur was issued during the first year of his reign and it weighs around 10.9g. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Shihab ud din Muhammad Sahib Qiran Sani Shah Jahan Badshah Ghazi’ in the four lines, Sanah RY 1 is written in the second line. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with the ‘Kalima’ with the Hijri year 1037. Mint name on the coin is not seen properly, probably minted at Surat.
