The last third Farthing of U.K

2017-04-13 Thu

This denomination was last minted during the reign of King George V.

The third farthing was first minted for Malta in 1827 CE yet it is considered to be part of British coinage as during that time Malta was a part of British Colonies. The lower denomination was not circulated in Britain because living in Briton was expensive and such lower denomination was not considered appropriated in the English coinage.

The First coin in this denomination was minted in copper metal and depicts the bust of King George IV on it. Later on, this coin was issued in bronze during Queen Victoria’s reign. The obverse of this coin features the monarch’s bust with the continuous Latina abbreviates encircling it. The reverse of this coin depicts a wreath and denomination with the date.

In 1902, during King Edward VII’s sovereign coins worth approximately £100 were minted. The last coin of this denomination was issued in 1913 with the bust of King George V facing left.
