Special Spanish Colonial Stamps

2017-04-12 Wed

Many Spanish colonial issues are rare yet undervalued. They are not as popular as French colonial issues. After Spanish Morocco was acquired by Spain in 1859, it joined with French Morocco and Tangier to become the Kingdom of Morocco in 1956. Spain retains Cueta and Melilla which are also claimed by Morocco.

There was a shortage of stamps in 1920 and Spanish Morocco Justice revenue stamps were released with the upper and lower halves overprinted and surcharged as postage stamps. Separate halves are not very popular among collectors unless they are on a cover. Almost all the stamps are off centre. Undamaged stamps without toning and straight edges are hard to find. The set in unused hinged condition is listed at $29.10 and in mint never-hinged condition at $55. Stamps featuring designs without perforations are acceptable.
