On May 11th, the sale of Proof 2017-W American Buffalo 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine gold $50 coin will begin. The designs are based on sculptor James Earle Fraser's work from the Indian Head 5 cent-coin. It was used for a part of 1913’s production and was replaced with the Bison on Plain reverse subtype from 1913 to 1938. The original 5-cent coin designs do not have the extra inscriptions that are featured on the gold version. The pricing will be disclosed closer to the release date.

The series was introduced in 2006 and consisted of Mint-marked Proof version for collectors and an unmarked version with no special finish for bullion investment. 21,844 2016-W Proof American Buffalo gold $50 coins have been sold out completely.
