Princely State of Devgarh Baria

We have learned till date how India was ruled by British and how its administration was divided into Provinces and Princely States. Though the ruler who ruled these states were Kings, for the British administration, there was only one king who sat on the throne of England and everyone else were Princes. But have you heard or learned about a Princely State which was also called Tribal-State? Yes, the State of Devgarh Baria was called a Tribal-state.

The state of Baria was surrounded and protected due to its unique geographical location suited into the tribal section, near Panam River. It was established in 1782 by King Vatai Rawar’s younger son who belonging to the lineage of Chauhans.

This Copper Paisa’s obverse side depicts a flower design in the centre which is surrounded by a legend ‘Raj Dev...ga...ba'( Raj Devgrah Baria). The reverse side of the coins also depicts a floral design and jhar. This rare coin is unpublished and in fine condition.

King's of Baria never gave any monetary compensation to Muslims or Maratha rulers. Internal state affairs of this state were performed independently. Under British rule, these kings joined Imperial Cadet Crops and held the title of ‘Knight Commander of India'.

The State of Baria joined the newly formed Indian union after 1947 and later surfaced as a part of the state of Gujarat.
