2017-04-10 Mon
A unique oroide (copper-tin) composition Proof 60 Judd 169 1855 Flying Eagle pattern large cent belonging to Steve Brewer’s group of Flying Eagle cent patterns was sold at Kagin’s auctions on 9th and 10th March for $4,993.75.There are many kinds of Flying Eagle cent patterns dated 1854 to 1858. The eagle on this particular coin is more masculine and has curved neck when compared to James B. Longacre’s adopted design for the Flying Eagle cent.
The die pair was used to produce patterns in various compositions like copper-nickel, pure copper and bronze. The golden tinge indicates that the coin does not contain nickel and has more tin than a bronze.
