Overprint on Indian stamp

2017-04-10 Mon

Previously we have studied about Court-Fee stamps of Indian Princely States, but have you read about overprint Court-Fee stamps after Independences? Yes in 1948 India Post issued machine overprint stamps.

These stamps’ overprint depicts ‘Rajasthan' in Devnagari. This stamp was issued as a fiscal or revenue collection stamp for the government section. This stamp was proof that the fees have been paid or it is to be paid.

The overprint stamp was issued because before independence the princely states had its own system of revenue collection through the stamps. This stamp is similar to the Court-Fees stamp of British India which depicts the portrait of King George VI in the vignette but this stamp depicts National Emblem of Republic India (Lion capital) .

Here’s an interesting fact: Did you know that this stamp depicts eight different languages in the background of the overprint?
Interesting isn’t it?
