Mughal Emperor Babur’s Coin Sold for INR 17,000

Babur was the founder of Mughal Empire in India. He founded this empire after defeating the last ruler of Delhi Sultanate, Ibrahim Lodi in First Battle of Panipat in 1526. He was the first Mughal ruler to rule India from 1526 to 1530. He was the eldest son of Umar Sheikh Mirza. He succeeded the throne of Ferghana, now in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, when he was only 12 years old. He was a descendant of Timur on his father's side and Chengiz Khan from his mother’s side. In the beginning, he faced lots of opposition, but after a long struggle, he managed to be a king of Delhi.

Babur issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. Silver coins issued by him have the emperor’s name on the obverse, and mint name and date in the margin; whereas reverse depicts kalima in the center and the name of the four Khalifas in the margin.

This silver shahrukhi issued by him weighs around 4.5g; obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Zahir Al-Din Muhammad Babar Badshah Ghazi’ within the circle, mint name, and date in the margin. The reverse of the coin has Kalima inscribed on it within ornate border and the name of the four Khalifas in the margin.

This coin was sold for INR 17,000 at Todywalla Auction.
