New Israeli Banknotes Featuring Women

2017-04-05 Wed

It has been officially announced that new 20 and 100 shekel banknotes of Israel, featuring portraits of famous Hebrew-language female poets Rachel and Leah Goldberg, have reached the final design stages.

The red coloured NIS 20 banknote will depict Rachel Bluwstein Sela or Rachel the Poetess while the orange coloured NIS 100 banknote will feature the portrait of Leah Goldberg.

Redesigned NIS 50 and NIS 200 banknotes released in 2014 and 2015 featured poets Shaul Tchernichovsky and Nathan Alterman. The new notes will also include advanced technology. The former governor of the Bank of Israel Stanley Fischer had decided which images will be shown on the new notes in 2012. Each new note has a different colour and length to help the visually impaired identify notes easily. Israel had issued notes featuring women for the first time in the year 1985. Israel’s first and only female prime minister Golda Meir was depicted on the NIS 10 bill back then. Israeli Notes depicting women were issued for the second time in 2014.

Other details about the release will be revealed later by the National Bank.
