Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s Coin Sold for INR 1, 60,000

Aurangzeb was the sixth and considered to be last effective ruler of Mughal Empire. He ruled for almost 50 years from 1658 until his death in 1707. During the reign of Aurangzeb, Mughal Empire reached its greatest extent. The reign of the Aurangzeb was almost engaged in constant warfare. He built up a massive army and began a program of military expansion along all the boundaries of his empire.

When Aurangzeb came to the reign, he replaced the use of Kalima on the coin with couplets, as he did not want to defile the Kalima through its association with the monetary transactions of infidels. He also introduces ‘Julus’ formula on his coin which reads as ‘Julus Maimanat Manus” with mint name and the year of his reign on the coin. There are two types of couplets with are found on his coins, ‘Mihir-e-Munir couplet’ and ‘Badr-e-Munir couplet’.

This gold mohur, minted at Zafarpur, which weighs around 10.9g, was sold for INR 1, 60, 000 at Rajgor’s Auction. This gold mohur was struck in the AH year 1098 during his 31st regnal year. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Chu Mihr-e-munir Badshah Aurangzeb Alamgir’ with AH Date and reverse of the coin reads as ‘Julus Formula, RY and Mint Name’ mint name is written at the bottom.
