Trideva: The Hindu Triad

‘Whence all creation had its origin, he, whether he fashioned it or whether he did not, he, who surveys it all from highest heaven, he knows - or maybe even he does not know.’- Nasadiya Sukta.

Origin of creation has been the subject of curiosity for human beings since eons. This, in turn, has lead to the conception of God. Every aspect of creation has fascinated human mind, which has divided its process in creation, sustenance, and destruction. This has divided the concept of God in a triad and best example of this thought process is the ‘Trideva’ of Hindu religion.

This holy triad consists of Brahma, Narayan (Vishnu) and Shiva (Mahesh) who perform the triple functions of the manifested Brahman (Universe). This triad is considered to be the manifestation of the Supreme Isvara also known as the ‘Saguna Brahman’ consisting of the ‘tri Guna’ (Satavik, Rajasik, and Tamasik) of nature.

To make the concept of manifestation clear to the simple human mind an analogy of performing different tasks came up which were created on a psychological plane through which a common man can connect and relate to the supreme being.

The concept of Trinity became popular in the post-Gupta era during the rise of ‘Purana’. In the Vedic times Vishnu was a minor solar deity and Shiva was known as ‘Rudra’. But like the Popular Hindu beliefs of Post-Gupta era, the Vedas had their own cosmic trinity ‘Agni’, ‘Vayu’ and ‘Surya’ that started with the celebration of all natural elements of nature.

To celebrate this concept of Hindu trinity, Thailand Government had issued a set of postage stamps in 2009.
