Rare Ancient Greek Coin Featuring a River God to Be Auctioned

A rare circa 500 to 450 B.C. electrum 12th stater from Cyzicus in Mysia, featuring an unnamed river god will be offered by Heritage Auction on 7th April at the 2017 Chicago Coin Expo, Chicago Cultural Center. The ancient coin features a man-headed bull and a fish below him on the obverse. The reverse depicts a quadripartite incuse design which is commonly found on early coins of Cyzicus in Mysia.

As per experts, the design was found on one-sixth of a stater but never before on a 12th stater. The small coin is 9 millimeters in diameter and weighs 1.3 grams. Electrum is a natural alloy made of silver and gold. This About Uncirculated, 4/5 strike and surface graded coin has an estimate of $1,000 to $1,300.
