Delhi Sultan Muhammad Shah’s Coin Sold For INR 15,000

This beautiful silver tanka was issued by Muhammad Shah of Tughluq dynasty. Tughluq dynasty was one of the greatest dynasties in India that ruled Delhi from 1320-1414. This dynasty was founded by Ghiyath Al-Din Tughluq.

The reign of Muhammad Shah was very challenging; it begins from AH 795 to 815, in the year AH 797 Nusrat Shah was established as the rival sultan. In the AH 801; Timur Shah Invaded Delhi and carried a large amount of booty from Delhi and from surrounding areas, Delhi was sacked by the invasion on Timur Shah and soon after his invasion, Tughluq dynasty came to an end. In the year 802 Mulla Iqbal Khan began the effective ruler of Delhi.

Muhammad Shah issued coin in gold, silver, copper and billon. Coins which he had struck in the later stage of his reign are heavier. This silver tanka of ‘Abul Al Muhamid’ type was sold for INR 15,000 at Rajgor’s Auction. On the obverse side, the coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan Al-Azam Abul Muhamid Mahmud Shah Muhammad Shah Firuz Shah Al-Sultan. And on the reverse side, the coin is inscribed as ‘Fi Zaman Al-Imam Amir Al-Muminin Khulidat Khilafatuhu; mint name and date are not clearly visible on the coin.
