1907 Saint-Gaudens, High Relief Double Eagle Auctioned for $35,250

2017-03-15 Wed

A Gem 1907 Saint-Gaudens, High Relief double eagle graded MS-65 was sold for $35,250 at the 2017 FUN show. The coin is always highly desirable among collectors. A total of 12,367 pieces were struck and most of them survived because of its high relief design. Many of them are above the grade Very Fine and all of them have a high market value due to its demand among collectors.

The coin represents the artistic excellence of Philadelphia Mint in the year 1907. High relief designs are not generally considered for mass production. Each coin took 12 minutes to be minted as multiple strikes were required. The relief was reduced by the end of that year. The edge lettering was the thickest element as the Coronet type featured a reeded edge. Many examples in MS-65 and finer exist but many of them were resubmissions to PCGS and NGC. MS-65 examples with a green CAC sticker or a Plus grade have a market value of $50,000.
