Fake American and Canadian Notes Circulated

2017-03-14 Tue

Fake Federal Reserve notes are found in Canada in more numbers than fake Canadian paper currency. There have been reports that fake notes are being circulated in two Alberta towns, Red Deer and Innisfail. These are colour photocopies on good quality paper mostly with duplicate serial numbers.

Gas stations and fast-food restaurants are vulnerable and the Bank of Canada is conducting educational campaigns by distributing pamphlets with information about security features of Canadian and American bills.

Officials are informing the public that they need to be careful about serial numbers and raised ink when it comes to American Money. In Burlington, retailers refrain from accepting Canadian money but U.S. paper money is accepted everywhere in Canada. A total of 3,967 Canadian banknotes were seized and 16,445 pieces worth $659,245 were passed. The number was $2,438,170 in 2014.
